  • Customer lifetime value = $500

The basic customer lifetime value formula is: 

CLV = Average Purchase Value × Purchase Frequency × Average Customer Lifespan 

This formula uses three core variables: 

  • Average Purchase Value 

This is the average amount a customer spends each time they make a purchase. 

Formula: 

Average Purchase Value = Total Revenue ÷ Total Number of Orders 

For example, if your business generates $100,000 from 2,000 orders: 

$100,000 ÷ 2,000 = $50 

Your average purchase value is $50. 

  • Purchase Frequency 

Purchase frequency shows how often an average customer buys during a specific period. 

Formula: 

Purchase Frequency = Total Number of Orders ÷ Number of Unique Customers 

If 2,000 orders came from 800 customers: 

2,000 ÷ 800 = 2.5 

The average customer made 2.5 purchases during the selected period. 

  • Average Customer Lifespan 

This is the average length of time customers remain active before they stop purchasing. 

For example, if your customer data indicates that customers typically remain active for four years, your average customer lifespan is four years. 

These three numbers provide the foundation for a basic CLV calculation. Shopify also uses this approach in its current guidance on CLV calculation. 

How to Calculate Customer Lifetime Value with Examples

Let’s say you run an online clothing store. 

Your data shows: 

  • Average purchase value = $75 
  • Purchase frequency = 4 purchases per year 
  • Average customer lifespan = 3 years 

Now apply the customer lifetime value formula: 

CLV = $75 × 4 × 3 

CLV = $900 

Your estimated customer lifetime value is $900. 

This means an average customer is expected to generate about $900 in revenue over a three-year relationship. 

The calculation is simple. The important part is making sure the underlying data represents your actual customer behavior. 

What Is Customer Lifetime Value Analysis?

Customer lifetime value analysis is the process of studying customer data to understand which customers generate the most value and what factors influence that value.

The goal is not simply to calculate one average CLV number. 

A useful analysis looks for patterns. 

For example, you may discover that: 

  • Customers acquired through referrals have higher CLV.

Start with the basic CLV formula. 

Calculate your average purchase value, purchase frequency, and customer lifespan.

Step 2: Segment Your Customers 

Do not rely only on one average number. 

Break customers into meaningful groups, such as:

Step 3: Compare CLV Across Segments 

Calculate the CLV for each segment. 

For example: 

Customer Segment  Average Purchase  Purchase Frequency  Lifespan  CLV 
Segment A  $50  4/year  2 years  $400 
Segment B  $80  5/year  3 years  $1,200 
Segment C  $120  2/year  2 years  $480 

Segment B has the highest CLV despite having a lower average purchase value than Segment C. 

Why? 

Because purchase frequency and customer lifespan are much stronger in that segment. 

Step 4: Compare CLV With CAC 

CLV becomes much more useful when you compare it with customer acquisition cost. 

For example: 

CLV = $1,200 

CAC = $300 

Your CLV-to-CAC ratio is: 

$1,200 ÷ $300 = 4:1 

A commonly cited benchmark is a 3:1 LTV-to-CAC ratio, although the appropriate target depends on the business model, margins, growth stage, and payback period. 

The ratio should therefore be treated as a benchmark, not a universal rule. 

Step 5: Identify the Drivers of High CLV 

Once you identify high-value customers, investigate why they are valuable. 

Look at factors such as: 

  • Product mix 
  • Purchase frequency 
  • Renewal behavior 
  • Customer support usage 
  • Acquisition source

  • Onboarding experience 
  • Upselling and cross-selling 
  • Contract length
