Microsoft is retiring the Azure Expert Managed Services Provider (Azure Expert MSP) program. For years, it was the top badge for partners that run complex Azure environments. Now Microsoft is moving its partner program toward AI and cloud modernization.
If you hold the badge today, or planned to apply, you need a new plan. This guide covers the key dates, what you keep, and what to work on next.
Quick answer: Microsoft stopped accepting new Azure Expert MSP enrollments on September 15, 2026. Renewals end in January 2027, and the program retires by the end of 2027. Microsoft recommends the Frontier Partner specialization as the path forward. Azure specializations and Cloud & AI Platforms Solutions Partner designations carry many of the same benefits.
Azure Expert MSP Retirement Timeline
The retirement happens in stages. Some dates apply to everyone. Others depend on your own anniversary date.
| Date | What happens |
| July 22, 2026 | Microsoft announces the Frontier Partner specialization at MCAPS Start for Partners |
| September 15, 2026 | Microsoft stops accepting new Azure Expert MSP enrollments |
| September 30, 2026 | The Frontier Partner specialization opens in Partner Center |
| January 2027 | Renewals close. Only partners whose renewal date falls before this can renew |
| Your anniversary date | Your current Azure Expert MSP benefits end |
| June 30, 2027 | Engagement eligibility through Frontier Accelerate for Azure ends with FY27 |
| End of 2027 | The Azure Expert MSP program fully retires |

If your renewal falls before January 2027, you can still renew. Microsoft says benefits last 12 months after enrollment. Check how that lines up with the end-of-2027 retirement for your own dates.
What Current Azure Expert MSPs Keep, and Until When
The good news is that nothing switches off overnight. Current partners keep their status and benefits through their enrollment anniversary date.
Here is what stays in place for now:
- Your badge and benefits: These run until your current anniversary date.
- Renewal option: If your renewal date comes before January 2027, you can renew to stay enrolled.
- Engagement eligibility: Your enrollment still qualifies you for certain engagements under Frontier Accelerate for Azure. This lasts through FY27, which ends June 30, 2027.
- Tools you can keep using: Microsoft has opened the direct MCA-E/EA to CSP transfer tool for Azure to more partners. You can access it through Cloud & AI Platforms Solutions Partner designations plus Direct Bill CSP authorization.
The renewal process itself has not changed. The window opens 45 days before your anniversary date and closes on that date, with a 30-day grace period. Within that window, you must meet the requirements, apply, and complete an audit.
For the full list of requirements, see our guide to becoming an Azure Expert MSP.
So is one more renewal worth it? That depends on your timing. If your anniversary is close, renewing can protect your co-sell access while you build toward the next credential. If it is months away, your effort may be better spent on specializations.
What Replaces Azure Expert MSP
There is no single one-to-one replacement. Instead, Microsoft points partners to three credentials that work together.
Frontier Partner Specialization
This is Microsoft’s recommended next step for eligible partners. It recognizes partners that can design, build, deploy, govern, and secure AI agents across the Microsoft stack. That stack includes Microsoft 365 Copilot, Azure AI Foundry, GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Entra, and Microsoft Purview.
To qualify, you need:
- Four specializations: Microsoft 365 Copilot, Data Security, Identity and Access Management, and either AI Apps on Microsoft Azure or AI Platform on Microsoft Azure
- Skilling: Five people with the Frontier Transformation Engineer badge
- Certification: Three people with the Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate (DP-600) certification
- Audit: A passed third-party audit
The same people can hold both the badge and the certification. Benefits include Frontier-aligned co-sell eligibility, Microsoft Agent prepurchase plan credits, Microsoft 365 E7 licensing, and marketing support.

One point to note: the Frontier Partner badge is a different credential. It retires at the end of June 2027 and doesn’t convert automatically into the specialization. The specialization is the long-term path.
Azure Specializations
Azure specializations are audited credentials for specific workloads, such as AI platforms, app modernization, or infrastructure migration. Microsoft’s FY27 Incentives guide maps the engagements you had through Azure Expert MSP to the Azure specializations that offer similar access.
For most Azure-focused MSPs, these are the closest match to what the old badge offered. They also show customers exactly where your strengths lie.
Cloud & AI Platforms Solutions Partner Designations
Cloud & AI Platforms is now the Solutions Partner badge for Azure. It replaces the separate Azure badges for Data & AI, Digital & App Innovation, and Infrastructure. Your requirements, benefits, and specialization mappings stay the same.
This designation is the foundation. Many Azure benefits, incentives, and tools now flow through it.
5 Steps to Take Now
You have time, but not much. These five steps will help you move without losing momentum.
1. Check Your Dates
Find your Azure Expert MSP anniversary date in Partner Center. Then decide if one more renewal makes sense. If your renewal window opens before January 2027, plan the audit now.
2. Map Your Current Benefits
List the co-sell, incentive, and engagement benefits you use today. Next, use Microsoft’s FY27 Incentives guide to see which Azure specializations offer similar access. This shows you what to protect first.
3. Run a Gap Check for Frontier Partner
Compare your team against the Frontier Partner requirements. Count your active specializations, badge holders, and DP-600 certified staff. If your practice centers on Azure infrastructure, you may need to add Copilot, data security, or identity skills first.
4. Build a Skilling Plan
Assign owners and target dates for each missing badge and certification. Start with the Frontier Transformation Engineer badge, since you need five holders. Avoid building your plan around certifications Microsoft is retiring. They stay valid until their expiry date but can’t be renewed.
5. Update How You Sell
Review your website, partner profile, and sales decks. Remove claims that depend on Azure Expert MSP once your status ends. Then lead with the specializations you hold and the AI services you deliver.
Common Transition Challenges
Most partners will face at least one of these hurdles.
- A broader skill set: Frontier Partner spans AI, data, identity, and security. Pure infrastructure teams will need new skills. Microsoft has also retired several Azure exams in 2026, including Azure Developer Associate (AZ-204) on July 31 and Azure Security Engineer Associate (AZ-500) on August 31. Start skilling early and consider hiring for gaps.
- Several audits instead of one: Each Azure specialization has its own audit. Plan them in sequence so your team is not overloaded.
- Lost differentiation: Customers knew the Azure Expert MSP badge. Explain your new credentials in plain terms on your site and in proposals.
- Operational strain: Skilling and audits take time away from customers. Automating routine tasks frees your team for this work.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. When does the Azure Expert MSP program retire?
Microsoft says the program will retire by the end of 2027. New enrollments ended on September 15, 2026, and renewals end in January 2027.
2. Can I still apply to become an Azure Expert MSP?
No. Microsoft closed new applications on September 15, 2026. Only current partners with a renewal date before January 2027 can renew.
3. Should I renew before January 2027?
It depends on your anniversary date. If your renewal window falls before January 2027, one more renewal keeps your benefits for 12 months while you work toward Azure specializations and Frontier Partner. If your team’s time is limited, prioritize the specializations you will need long term.
4. Do current Azure Expert MSPs lose their benefits right away?
No. You keep your benefits through your current anniversary date. Certain engagement eligibility also continues through June 30, 2027.
5. What does Microsoft recommend instead?
Microsoft recommends the Frontier Partner specialization for eligible partners. Azure specializations and Cloud & AI Platforms Solutions Partner designations also carry many of the same benefits.
6. Is the Frontier Partner specialization open now?
Yes. Eligible partners have been able to earn the Frontier Partner specialization in Partner Center since September 30, 2026.
7. Is the Frontier Partner badge the same as the Frontier Partner specialization?
No. The badge retires at the end of June 2027 and doesn’t convert automatically into the specialization. The specialization is the long-term credential, and it requires four specializations, skilled staff, and an audit.
Conclusion
The Azure Expert MSP program served top Azure partners well. Now Microsoft is moving its recognition toward AI, security, and workload-specific skills.
The partners who adapt fastest will be the ones who act early. Check your dates, map your benefits, and close your gaps for Frontier Partner and Azure specializations. Then tell customers clearly what your new credentials mean for them.
This shift also asks a lot of your team. Automating routine operations gives them the time to make it.
